WHAT IS IT LIKE LIVING OFF-BASE?

Japan is one of the safest countries in the world!
The atmosphere and environment are very beautiful as well. If you are stationed here or visiting, you will have an awesome experience!

If you watch Japanese tv shows, movies, or studied Japanese culture, you may have an idea on how the houses are here in Japan.

There are many customers who are surprised when they first view properties due to the room size differences comparing to American houses.

We have listed a few of differences below for you to check out beforehand!

・Garbage Policy・

Be sure to follow the Japanese garbage policy when living off-base. This can lead to problems when residents refuse to separate their trash and do not follow the guideline of the garbage policy of their area, they live in. Usually when the rules are not followed, the trash collectors will leave the specific trash at the garbage site.

・Noise・

When living off-base, loud noises are one of the primary problems. Be cautious on what the TV volume is or if you own a sound system as it can shake the neighbor’s wall and cause complaints. Always avoid making loud noise before 8:00am and after 10:00pm.

・Parking Policy・

If you do not have a parking space included in your lease contract, in most cases, you may get into trouble by parking at open spaces. Try finding a coin parking in the area.

・Vents and Drains・

We recommend customers to try cleaning their vents and drains regularly. If you do not know how to take the vent off and on, just ask your realtor! Leaving drains uncleaned can lead to it being clogged.

・Toilet・

Many customers are surprised that in Japan, people wash their hands with the water that comes out the tank. This is one reason many houses do not have a sink upstairs by the toilet.

・Pets・

Usually when you have a pet, you will have to pay double or more of the security deposit. Many landlords will ask what type of pet it is. (Dog, Cat…. etc.) Even though, dogs are quite easier to find houses than cats, if you have a large dog, sometimes the landlord will be a little more worried. It would help us if you have a picture or describe your pet in detail!

・Travel and Deployments・

We advise our customers to notify us about long-term traveling or deployments. Due to the humidity of Japanese summers, many properties off-base will need to be careful of mold/mildew buildup. We will give more information

When Renting A House Off Base・・・

In Japan there are many different rules that are advised to be followed while living outside of base.

Other than the instructions given from the housing office on base, we help our customers get accustomed to these rules and any other problems they may face.
If you choose to live in an apartment over a house, you will need to follow the rules of the local neighborhood to use the trash site for your garbage. For more information CLICK HERE!
